So...I love trees! Not only do they help sustain life on this earth, providing us with air, food, warmth, shelter and beauty... they are a blast to climb!
Also, did I mention they make a great base for a metaphor??
In my first post, I described the 3 penultimate goals of Adventure MVMT (mobile, durable, adaptable) as roots interweaving into, supporting and forming the trunk, aka Capability. Over this 4 part series I'll be going into deeper detail with each of these skills, unpacking how i define them and why I chose to build a whole fitness philosophy around them, beginning with the trunk, Capable.
Capability, as I've come to understand it, is the skill to come out on top in any given situation. So what does that look like in the context of Adventure MVMT? And how does one train a skill so broad in scope?
Know Your Adventure:
Be knowledgable in reference to whatever adventure you decide to go on so you can mentally and physically prepare for the trail ahead. Read a book, go to your local outdoor store, or hit up your friendly neighborhood BAREfit MVMT Coach. Learn the terrain, weather, common injuries, strength/cardio requirements, local wildlife you may need to outrun, etc. With this beta, you can begin to set fitness goals.
Know Your Body:
Refine those goals by exploring your own body's limitations and untapped potential. Even the most finely tuned bodies have kinks in their fitness armor, and the most out of shape bodies can tackle some pretty amazing feats when pushed. Working with a MVMT Coach to assess/address these weak areas and untapped badassery will both reduce your risk of injury and increase your overall performance & enjoyment of any adventure.
Train Holistically:
Be a renaissance human in relation to natural movement skills, because rock climbing is never just rock climbing. It's the endurance needed to hike, carrying 30+lbs of gear up and down Muir Valley's hills. Balance and dexterity to traverse fallen trees, gnarly roots and cross slippery creek beds. Healthy posture and balanced core to belay for an eternity as your partner refuses to come down until they top their latest 11.b project route...well, you get the idea.
Being a Capable Adventurer is just as much about mental preparedness as physical. Both in the sense of general mental toughness & imprinting Adventure Specific movement patterns onto your nervous system allowing efficient movement through your environment, while allowing you to focus on what really matters...enjoying the Adventure!
Next up we are digging into the roots with Mobile...so stay tuned!
